Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What a washing machine costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 0.50 kWh | 8.62 cents |
| One day (0.7 hours) | 0.35 kWh | $0.06 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 11 kWh | $1.83 |
| One year (12 months) | 128 kWh | $22 |
Source: Planning watts of 500 and 0.7 hours a day, hours a day, equal to about five loads a week. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 1% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cold water, three loads a week | 300 | 0.4 | 4 | $0.63 |
| Five loads a week | 500 | 0.7 | 11 | $1.83 |
| Daily loads with a built-in heater | 1,000 | 1 | 30 | $5.24 |
The lowest case costs $1 a month and the highest $5. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same washing machine costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 11 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $1.26 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $1.26 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $1.28 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $1.83 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $4.30 |
| California | 31.35 | $3.34 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $3.24 |

How a washing machine uses electricity
The washer motor and pump draw little power. The cost of laundry shows up mostly on the water heater and the dryer, so a page about the washer alone understates the cost of a load.
The washer itself uses little electricity. Most of the cost of a laundry load is the hot water, which shows up on the water heater line. Front-loaders use less water and spin faster than top-loaders.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 250 to 1,000 watts. At 0.7 hours a day that is $1 to $4 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of a washing machine
- Wash in cold water when you can.
- Run full loads.
- Pick the high spin speed to cut dryer time.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 500 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 0.7 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Washing Machine cost questions
How much electricity does a washing machine use per load?
Usually a fraction of a kWh for the machine itself. Hot water and drying use much more, so count them when you price laundry.
Is cold water washing worth it?
It removes the water heating from each load, and modern detergents work well in cold water for most clothes. Heavily soiled items may still need warm or hot.
How much does a washing machine cost to run per hour?
At 500 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about 8.62 cents an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does a washing machine use in a month?
About 11 kWh for 0.7 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 500 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
