Source: Planning watts of 35 and 24 hours a day, hours a day, using the average draw because the compressor cycles. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.

The monthly cost is 3% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.

Three real-life cases

One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.

What it costs in other states

The same chest freezer costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 26 kWh a month.

How a chest freezer uses electricity

A chest freezer opens from the top, so cold air stays in when the lid is lifted, which is why it uses less than an upright freezer of the same size. Its compressor cycles, and the average draw over a day is far below the label rating.

Age, size and where it sits matter most. A freezer in a hot garage runs far more than one in a cool basement, and a freezer that is full holds its temperature better than one that is nearly empty.

The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 15 to 80 watts. At 24 hours a day that is $2 to $10 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.

Ways to cut the cost of a chest freezer

  • Keep it full, using containers of water or bags of ice to fill gaps.
  • Place it in a cool spot with room around it for air to move.
  • Keep the lid seal clean and defrost it before ice builds up.

How we got these numbers

The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 35 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 24 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.

The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.

Chest Freezer cost questions

How much does it cost to run a chest freezer?

At about 35 watts on average, a chest freezer uses roughly 25 kWh a month. Multiply by your price per kWh. A hot location or an old model raises it.

Is a chest freezer cheaper to run than an upright?

Usually, at the same size. The lid keeps cold air in, and chest models often have better insulation.

How much does a chest freezer cost to run per hour?

At 35 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about 0.60 cents an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.

How many kWh does a chest freezer use in a month?

About 26 kWh for 24 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 35 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
