What an air fryer costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 1.50 kWh | $0.26 |
| One day (0.4 hours) | 0.60 kWh | $0.10 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 18 kWh | $3.14 |
| One year (12 months) | 219 kWh | $38 |
Source: Planning watts of 1,500 and 0.4 hours a day, hours of cooking time a day, equal to about 25 minutes. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 2% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A quick snack each day | 1,400 | 0.2 | 9 | $1.47 |
| Dinner most nights | 1,500 | 0.4 | 18 | $3.14 |
| Large family, heavy use | 1,800 | 1 | 55 | $9.43 |
The lowest case costs $1 a month and the highest $9. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same air fryer costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 18 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $2.16 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $2.16 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $2.20 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $3.14 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $7.37 |
| California | 31.35 | $5.72 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $5.55 |

How an air fryer uses electricity
An air fryer is a small convection oven with a heating element and a fan. It preheats quickly and cooks in a small space, so a short cook often uses less electricity than a full-size oven, even though the element is similar in power.
Cook time and size matter most. A small batch cooks fast. A large basket of food takes longer. Using it instead of a full oven for a small meal uses less energy, and using it in addition to the oven does not.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 800 to 1,800 watts. At 0.4 hours a day that is $2 to $4 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of an air fryer
- Use it in place of the full-size oven for small meals.
- Skip preheating when the recipe allows, or keep it short.
- Do not overfill the basket, since crowded food cooks unevenly and takes longer.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 1,500 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 0.4 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Air Fryer cost questions
How much does it cost to run an air fryer?
At 1,500 watts, a 20 minute cook uses 0.5 kWh at full power, and less if the element cycles. Multiply by your price per kWh.
Is an air fryer cheaper than an oven?
For small amounts of food, usually, because it preheats fast and heats a small space. For a large meal the oven can be more practical.
How much does an air fryer cost to run per hour?
At 1,500 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about $0.26 an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does an air fryer use in a month?
About 18 kWh for 0.4 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 1,500 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
