Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What a dishwasher costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 1.30 kWh | $0.22 |
| One day (1 hour) | 1.30 kWh | $0.22 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 40 kWh | $6.81 |
| One year (12 months) | 474 kWh | $82 |
Source: Planning watts of 1,300 and 1 hour a day, hours a day, equal to about one cycle a day. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 5% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Air dry, four cycles a week | 1,200 | 0.6 | 22 | $3.77 |
| One cycle a day | 1,300 | 1 | 40 | $6.81 |
| Heated dry, two cycles a day | 1,800 | 2 | 109 | $19 |
The lowest case costs $4 a month and the highest $19. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same dishwasher costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 40 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $4.67 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $4.68 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $4.76 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $6.81 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $15.96 |
| California | 31.35 | $12.39 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $12.02 |

How a dishwasher uses electricity
A dishwasher’s electricity goes mostly to the heating element, for the wash water and the dry cycle, and the rest to the pump and motor. Using the heated dry setting adds a large share of the energy of a cycle.
The heating element and drying cycle use most of the electricity, and the rest is the water heater. Energy Star models use noticeably less than older ones.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 1,200 to 2,400 watts. At 1 hour a day that is $6 to $13 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of a dishwasher
- Skip the heated dry setting and open the door at the end of the cycle.
- Run only full loads.
- Scrape plates instead of pre-rinsing.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 1,300 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 1 hour is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Dishwasher cost questions
Is a dishwasher cheaper than washing dishes by hand?
Often, because a full load uses less hot water than hand washing the same dishes under a running tap. Hand washing in a filled basin can come out close.
Does the heated dry setting cost much?
It adds the element to the end of the cycle, which can be a large part of the cycle’s energy. Air drying with the door cracked costs nothing.
How much does a dishwasher cost to run per hour?
At 1,300 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about $0.22 an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does a dishwasher use in a month?
About 40 kWh for 1 hour of use a day over 30.4 days at 1,300 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
