Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What a freezer costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 0.045 kWh | 0.78 cents |
| One day (24 hours) | 1.08 kWh | $0.19 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 33 kWh | $5.66 |
| One year (12 months) | 394 kWh | $68 |
Source: Planning watts of 45 and 24 hours a day, hours a day, using the average draw because the compressor cycles. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 4% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New chest freezer | 30 | 24 | 22 | $3.77 |
| Typical freezer | 45 | 24 | 33 | $5.66 |
| Old upright in a warm garage | 100 | 24 | 73 | $13 |
The lowest case costs $4 a month and the highest $13. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same freezer costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 33 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $3.88 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $3.88 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $3.96 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $5.66 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $13.26 |
| California | 31.35 | $10.29 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $9.98 |

How a freezer uses electricity
A freezer cycles like a refrigerator, with a smaller appliance and a lower target temperature. Its use varies with the surrounding air, so the same freezer costs more in a hot garage than in a basement.
Chest freezers use less than upright models of the same size because cold air stays in when you open the lid. A full freezer holds its temperature better than an empty one.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 30 to 100 watts. At 24 hours a day that is $4 to $13 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of a freezer
- Keep the freezer full, using containers of water if needed.
- Defrost manual-defrost models before ice builds up.
- Place it in a cool spot, not a hot garage.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 45 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 24 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Freezer cost questions
Does a full freezer use less electricity?
Yes. Frozen food holds the cold, so the compressor runs less after the door is opened. An empty freezer has only air to cool.
Is it cheaper to run a chest freezer or an upright?
A chest freezer is usually cheaper at the same size, because the lid keeps cold air in. Uprights are easier to organize, and that is the trade-off.
How much does a freezer cost to run per hour?
At 45 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about 0.78 cents an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does a freezer use in a month?
About 33 kWh for 24 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 45 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
