Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What an electric stove costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 1.50 kWh | $0.26 |
| One day (1 hour) | 1.50 kWh | $0.26 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 46 kWh | $7.86 |
| One year (12 months) | 547 kWh | $94 |
Source: Planning watts of 1,500 and 1 hour a day, hours of burner time a day, counting the time burners are actually heating. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 5% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One burner for half an hour | 1,200 | 0.5 | 18 | $3.14 |
| Cooking dinner most days | 1,500 | 1 | 46 | $7.86 |
| Large family, two burners for two hours | 2,500 | 2 | 152 | $26 |
The lowest case costs $3 a month and the highest $26. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same electric stove costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 46 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $5.39 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $5.40 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $5.50 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $7.86 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $18.42 |
| California | 31.35 | $14.30 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $13.87 |

How an electric stove uses electricity
An electric stove top has resistance burners of different sizes, and each one cycles on and off to hold its setting. A large burner on high can draw about 2,000 watts, and a small one on low a few hundred. This page covers the burners. See the electric oven page for baking.
Burner size, heat setting and the time burners stay on set the cost. Matching the pot to the burner and using a lid use less energy. An induction cooktop wastes less heat than a coil or smooth-top element.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 1,000 to 3,000 watts. At 1 hour a day that is $5 to $16 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of an electric stove
- Use a pot that covers the burner, and use a lid.
- Turn the burner off a few minutes early and let the residual heat finish the job.
- Use a kettle, microwave or small appliance for small jobs.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 1,500 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 1 hour is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Electric Stove cost questions
How much electricity does an electric stove use?
A burner on high draws about 1,000 to 2,500 watts, depending on its size. One hour of cooking at an average of 1,500 watts uses 1.5 kWh.
Is an induction cooktop cheaper to run?
It usually uses less electricity for the same cooking, because more of the heat goes into the pot. How much less depends on how you cook.
How much does an electric stove cost to run per hour?
At 1,500 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about $0.26 an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does an electric stove use in a month?
About 46 kWh for 1 hour of use a day over 30.4 days at 1,500 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
