Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What an electric oven costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 2.50 kWh | $0.43 |
| One day (0.7 hours) | 1.75 kWh | $0.30 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 53 kWh | $9.17 |
| One year (12 months) | 638 kWh | $110 |
Source: Planning watts of 2,500 and 0.7 hours a day, hours a day of heating element time. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 6% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baking a few times a week | 2,000 | 0.3 | 18 | $3.14 |
| Cooking most days | 2,500 | 0.7 | 53 | $9.17 |
| Holiday baking, 3 hours | 3,500 | 3 | 319 | $55 |
The lowest case costs $3 a month and the highest $55. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same electric oven costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 53 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $6.29 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $6.29 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $6.41 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $9.17 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $21.49 |
| California | 31.35 | $16.68 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $16.18 |

How an electric oven uses electricity
An electric oven switches its elements on and off to hold the set temperature. The label shows the total wattage of all elements, which is higher than the average draw while the oven is at temperature.
Preheating, door openings and the size of the oven change the cost. A stovetop burner is another large load that comes on top of oven use.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 2,000 to 5,000 watts. At 0.7 hours a day that is $7 to $18 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of an electric oven
- Skip preheating for dishes that do not need it.
- Cook several things at once and use the residual heat.
- Use a toaster oven or microwave for small meals.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 2,500 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 0.7 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Electric Oven cost questions
How much does it cost to run an electric oven for an hour?
About 2.5 kWh at an average draw of 2,500 watts, so multiply 2.5 by your price per kWh. The calculator on this page does the multiplication at your own price.
Is a self-cleaning cycle expensive?
It runs the oven at very high heat for a few hours, so it uses much more than a normal bake. Run it only when needed and after a large meal while the oven is already warm.
How much does an electric oven cost to run per hour?
At 2,500 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about $0.43 an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does an electric oven use in a month?
About 53 kWh for 0.7 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 2,500 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
