Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What a microwave costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 1.10 kWh | $0.19 |
| One day (0.25 hours) | 0.28 kWh | $0.05 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 8 kWh | $1.44 |
| One year (12 months) | 100 kWh | $17 |
Source: Planning watts of 1,100 and 0.25 hours a day, hours a day, equal to about 15 minutes of cooking. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 1% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reheating once a day | 1,000 | 0.1 | 3 | $0.52 |
| Fifteen minutes a day | 1,100 | 0.25 | 8 | $1.44 |
| Heavy use, an hour a day | 1,500 | 1 | 46 | $7.86 |
The lowest case costs $1 a month and the highest $8. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same microwave costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 8 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $0.99 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $0.99 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $1.01 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $1.44 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $3.38 |
| California | 31.35 | $2.62 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $2.54 |

How a microwave uses electricity
A microwave draws a lot of power but only for minutes at a time. The wattage on the label is the electrical input, and the cooking power is lower. The clock display and any always-on circuitry draw a small constant amount.
The monthly cost is small. Heating small portions in a microwave usually uses less energy than a full-size oven.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 700 to 1,500 watts. At 0.25 hours a day that is $1 to $2 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of a microwave
- Use the microwave instead of the oven for small portions.
- Cover food to heat it faster.
- Check whether the clock display runs all day. It is a tiny but constant load.
Next step: Electric oven costs. For general ideas, read how to lower your electric bill.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 1,100 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 0.25 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Microwave cost questions
How much does it cost to run a microwave for 10 minutes?
A 1,100 watt microwave uses about 0.18 kWh in 10 minutes. Multiply that by your price per kWh for the cost, which is only a few cents in most states.
Is a microwave cheaper than an oven?
For small portions, yes. For a large dish that needs a long cook, the oven can come out about even, because the microwave has to run for a long time too.
How much does a microwave cost to run per hour?
At 1,100 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about $0.19 an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does a microwave use in a month?
About 8 kWh for 0.25 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 1,100 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
