How to read these numbers

  • Homes is the number of residential customers the provider reported. It shows size, not service quality.
  • Cents per kWh and bill a month are averages across all of a provider's residential customers in 2025, including every plan and every household. They are not the price of a plan you can buy today.
  • kWh a month differs by provider because customers differ. A provider with heavier users will show a higher bill even at the same price.

Use it as context

To compare plans you could actually buy, read each plan's Electricity Facts Label at your own usage. See Texas electricity plans and how to find the cheapest plan for you.

Retail providers and delivery companies are different

Oncor, CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric, AEP Texas and Texas-New Mexico Power deliver electricity and are not on this list. A retail provider sells you the energy and sends the bill, and the delivery company keeps the lines working. Read what a retail electric provider is for the split.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the largest retail electric provider in Texas?

By residential customers in 2025, Reliant was the largest with 1,545,510 homes, followed by TXU Energy with 1,442,516.

Is a bigger provider better?

Not necessarily. Customer counts show size only. Compare plans at your usage and read the contract terms.

Why does a provider’s average price differ from its plan prices?

The average blends every plan and every customer in the year, including fees and usage patterns. A plan you buy today has its own label price.

Where does this data come from?

It comes from EIA Form EIA-861, final 2025 data, which retail power marketers file with the federal government.
