What to check before you pick a provider
- The price at your usage. Use the Electricity Facts Label and a full year of your own kWh.
- The term and the exit. Read the early termination fee and how the plan renews.
- The fees. Base charges, minimum usage fees and payment fees.
- Customer service. Hours, phone and online options, and how billing disputes are handled, as written in the Terms of Service.
- Billing options. Paper or online, payment methods, due date flexibility and any fee for each.
- Complaints. You can file a complaint with the Public Utility Commission of Texas if a provider breaks the rules, so it is worth knowing how to reach it.

Why we do not rank providers
A trustworthy ranking needs clean data on prices, complaints and service across every provider, and that data is not available to us in a form we can verify. Many ranking sites also earn money when a visitor signs up, which can shape the order. We would rather show you the facts we can stand behind and the method to compare, and say what we cannot rank. Our editorial policy explains the rule.
Questions to ask a provider before you sign
- What is the total price at my usage, including every fee?
- What happens when the term ends, and when will you tell me?
- What is the early termination fee, and when does it not apply?
- Are there bill credits or usage conditions I could miss?
- How do I reach you, and what are the hours?
