Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

Tesla Model Y charging cost by trim
| Trim | kWh per 100 mi | EPA range | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | 240 V charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard RWD (18 inch wheels) | 24.3 | 321 mi | 4.2 | $42 | 10.0 h |
| Long Range RWD | 25.2 | 357 mi | 4.3 | $43 | 10.0 h |

| Performance AWD | 32.0 | 306 mi | 5.5 | $55 | 12.2 h |
Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2026, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 31 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.
About the Tesla Model Y and its energy use
The Model Y is a compact crossover SUV. In the 2026 EPA data it uses a little more electricity per mile than the equivalent Model 3 trim, and the gap between the two is small.
The Long Range trims have the longest EPA range of the Model Y, so a given number of miles uses a smaller share of the battery. For cost, only kWh per mile and your price per kWh count. The same car can cost very different amounts per mile in different states.
What it costs in other states
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | 3.2 | $32 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | 3.3 | $33 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | 3.3 | $33 |
| United States average | 17.23 | 4.7 | $47 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | 11.1 | $111 |
| California | 31.35 | 8.6 | $86 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | 8.4 | $84 |

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Tesla Model Y would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 8.2 | $82 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 12.4 | $124 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 16.5 | $165 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 20.6 | $206 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $0.81 a gallon | $0.97 a gallon | $1.14 a gallon | $1.30 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.18 a gallon | $1.42 a gallon | $1.66 a gallon | $1.90 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $2.78 a gallon | $3.33 a gallon | $3.89 a gallon | $4.44 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
Tesla Model Y charging cost questions
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla Model Y?
At about 27.5 kWh per 100 miles for the Long Range AWD trim, a month of 1,000 miles uses about 275 kWh. Multiply that by your price per kWh, or use the tables here for the US average and for the cheapest and costliest states.
Is the Model Y more expensive to charge than a Model 3?
Slightly, per mile. EPA lists the Long Range AWD Model Y at about 27.5 kWh per 100 miles and the Premium AWD Model 3 at about 26.4, so the gap is small.
How much does it cost to drive Tesla Model Y 100 miles?
At about 27.5 kWh per 100 miles and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, 100 miles costs about $4.74 when you charge at home.
How much does a full charge cost for Tesla Model Y?
Driving the full EPA range of 327 miles takes about 90 kWh from the wall for the Long Range AWD trim, which costs about $15 at the 2025 US average price. You rarely charge from empty, so most sessions cost much less.
