Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

What it costs in other states

Home charging versus public fast charging
Most Tesla owners charge at home overnight. On a road trip you use a public fast charger, and its price is set by the network. Networks price by the kWh in many places and by the minute in others, so check the price in the app or on the screen before you start.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 7.8 | $78 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 11.7 | $117 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 15.6 | $156 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 19.6 | $196 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $0.77 a gallon | $0.92 a gallon | $1.08 a gallon | $1.23 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.12 a gallon | $1.35 a gallon | $1.57 a gallon | $1.80 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $2.63 a gallon | $3.16 a gallon | $3.69 a gallon | $4.21 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How to lower what a Tesla costs to charge
- Charge at home when your plan is cheapest. If your utility offers time-of-use rates, schedule charging for the off-peak hours.
- Drive at moderate speeds. Efficiency falls as speed rises, so the same trip uses more energy at highway speeds.
- Keep tires at the recommended pressure and avoid carrying unneeded weight.
- Use public fast chargers for trips and not for daily driving, since home electricity usually costs less per kWh.
Tesla charging cost questions
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla at home?
At the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, a Model 3 Premium RWD costs about 4.2 cents per mile and a Model Y Long Range AWD about 4.7 cents per mile, from EPA data. That is roughly $42 to $47 for 1,000 miles.
How much does it cost to fully charge a Tesla?
Charging the energy needed to drive the full EPA range costs about $15 for a Model 3 Premium RWD (363 miles) and about $15 for a Model Y Long Range AWD (327 miles) at the US average price. The battery does not have to be emptied each time, so a daily top-up costs far less.
Is charging a Tesla at a public fast charger more expensive than at home?
Public prices are set by the network and vary by location and time of day, so check the price in the app before you plug in. The what-if table on this page shows the cost per mile at four prices.
Which Tesla is cheapest to charge?
In the EPA data for the 2026 model year, the Model 3 Standard RWD uses the least electricity per mile at about 24.3 kWh per 100 miles. The Cybertruck AWD uses the most at about 42.9.
