Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

Tesla Model 3 charging cost by trim
| Trim | kWh per 100 mi | EPA range | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | 240 V charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard RWD | 24.3 | 321 mi | 4.2 | $42 | 12.1 h |
| Premium RWD | 24.6 | 363 mi | 4.2 | $42 | 11.7 h |

| Performance AWD | 30.2 | 314 mi | 5.2 | $52 | 12.0 h |
Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2026, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 24 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.
About the Tesla Model 3 and its energy use
The Model 3 is a compact sedan. The Standard rear-wheel-drive trim has the lowest figure of any vehicle on this site, about 24.3 kWh per 100 miles, and the Performance trim uses about a quarter more for the same distance.
Most owners charge at home overnight, so the price that matters is the rate on your electric bill. If your plan has cheaper overnight hours, setting the car to start charging late can lower the cost of each mile. The EPA time to charge from empty on a 240 volt connection is close to 12 hours for the Premium trims, but a daily top-up takes a fraction of that.
What it costs in other states
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | 2.9 | $29 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | 2.9 | $29 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | 3.0 | $30 |
| United States average | 17.23 | 4.2 | $42 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | 10.0 | $100 |
| California | 31.35 | 7.7 | $77 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | 7.5 | $75 |

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Tesla Model 3 would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 7.4 | $74 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 11.1 | $111 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 14.8 | $148 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 18.5 | $185 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $0.73 a gallon | $0.87 a gallon | $1.02 a gallon | $1.16 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.06 a gallon | $1.27 a gallon | $1.49 a gallon | $1.70 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $2.49 a gallon | $2.99 a gallon | $3.48 a gallon | $3.98 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
Tesla Model 3 charging cost questions
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla Model 3 at home?
Multiply the EPA figure, about 24.6 kWh per 100 miles for the Premium rear-wheel-drive trim, by your price per kWh. The tables on this page do that at the US average price and for states at both ends of the range.
Which Model 3 trim is cheapest to charge?
The Standard and Premium rear-wheel-drive trims use the least electricity per mile in the EPA data. The Performance trim uses the most because of its larger motors and wheels.
How much does it cost to drive Tesla Model 3 100 miles?
At about 24.6 kWh per 100 miles and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, 100 miles costs about $4.25 when you charge at home.
How much does a full charge cost for Tesla Model 3?
Driving the full EPA range of 363 miles takes about 89 kWh from the wall for the Premium RWD trim, which costs about $15 at the 2025 US average price. You rarely charge from empty, so most sessions cost much less.
