Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2026, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 21 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.
About the BMW i4 and its energy use
The i4 is a four-door electric hatchback sold as a Gran Coupe. The eDrive40 on 18 inch wheels is the most efficient trim in the 2026 EPA data at about 28.5 kWh per 100 miles, with a range of 333 miles, and the M60 xDrive uses about 21 percent more.
EPA lists 7.0 to 9.0 hours to charge from empty on a 240 volt connection. Wheel size matters too, so check the label on the exact car you are considering.

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the BMW i4 would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 8.6 | $86 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 12.8 | $128 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 17.1 | $171 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 21.4 | $214 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $0.84 a gallon | $1.01 a gallon | $1.18 a gallon | $1.35 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.23 a gallon | $1.47 a gallon | $1.72 a gallon | $1.97 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $2.88 a gallon | $3.46 a gallon | $4.03 a gallon | $4.61 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
