Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2026, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 6 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.
About the Rivian R1T and its energy use
The R1T is an electric pickup. EPA lists about 42 to 45 kWh per 100 miles across the trims shown here, with a range from 258 to 380 miles, and the Dual Max has both the lowest energy use and the longest range.
The larger battery trims take longer to fill: EPA lists 15.0 hours on a 240 volt connection for the Dual Max and Tri Max. For daily driving the time matters less than the cost per mile, which is among the highest on this site.

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Rivian R1T would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 12.9 | $129 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 19.3 | $193 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 25.7 | $257 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 32.2 | $322 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $1.27 a gallon | $1.52 a gallon | $1.77 a gallon | $2.03 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.85 a gallon | $2.22 a gallon | $2.59 a gallon | $2.96 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $4.33 a gallon | $5.20 a gallon | $6.06 a gallon | $6.93 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
Rivian R1T charging cost questions
How much does it cost to charge a Rivian R1T?
At about 42.9 kWh per 100 miles for the Dual Large, 1,000 miles uses about 429 kWh. Multiply by your price per kWh, or use the tables here.
