Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2025, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 8 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.
About the Ford F-150 Lightning and its energy use
EPA lists no 2026 model year F-150 Lightning, so this page uses 2025 figures, the newest in the database. A full-size electric pickup is heavy and tall, and EPA rates every trim near 47 to 51 kWh per 100 miles, nearly twice what a Model 3 uses.
The large battery means a long charge on a 240 volt connection, from about 10 to nearly 15 hours in the EPA data. If you tow or haul, expect the energy use per mile to rise above the EPA figure. The cost per mile is the highest on this site.

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Ford F-150 Lightning would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 14.4 | $144 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 21.6 | $216 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 28.7 | $287 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 35.9 | $359 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $1.42 a gallon | $1.70 a gallon | $1.98 a gallon | $2.26 a gallon |
| US average price | $2.06 a gallon | $2.48 a gallon | $2.89 a gallon | $3.30 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $4.84 a gallon | $5.81 a gallon | $6.77 a gallon | $7.74 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
Ford F-150 Lightning charging cost questions
How much does it cost to charge an F-150 Lightning?
At about 47.9 kWh per 100 miles for the ER1 trim, 1,000 miles uses about 479 kWh. Multiply that by your price per kWh, or use the tables here.
Is a Lightning cheaper to run than a gas F-150?
It depends on your electricity price and the price of gas. The break-even gas price shown on this page tells you the cost per gallon at which a gas truck at a given mpg costs the same per mile.
How much does it cost to drive Ford F-150 Lightning 100 miles?
At about 47.9 kWh per 100 miles and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, 100 miles costs about $8.26 when you charge at home.
How much does a full charge cost for Ford F-150 Lightning?
Driving the full EPA range of 320 miles takes about 153 kWh from the wall for the 4WD ER1 trim, which costs about $26 at the 2025 US average price. You rarely charge from empty, so most sessions cost much less.
