Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2026, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 6 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.

About the Rivian R1S and its energy use

The R1S is a three-row SUV that shares its battery and drive options with the R1T. For these trims EPA lists the same efficiency and range figures for both vehicles, about 42 to 45 kWh per 100 miles.

As with the R1T, the large battery trims take 14 to 15 hours to fill from empty on a 240 volt connection, so most owners charge a little each night. The cost per mile follows the EPA figure and your price per kWh.

If you use public fast chargers

Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Rivian R1S would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.

Break-even gas price

Gas price per gallon at which a gas car costs the same per mile as home charging

North Dakota price$1.27 a gallon$1.52 a gallon$1.77 a gallon$2.03 a gallon
US average price$1.85 a gallon$2.22 a gallon$2.59 a gallon$2.96 a gallon
Hawaii price$4.33 a gallon$5.20 a gallon$6.06 a gallon$6.93 a gallon

If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.

How we calculate it

Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.

Rivian R1S charging cost questions

How much does it cost to charge a Rivian R1S?

At about 42.9 kWh per 100 miles for the Dual Large, 1,000 miles uses about 429 kWh. Multiply by your price per kWh, or use the tables on this page.

Is the R1S cheaper to charge than the R1T?

EPA lists the same energy use for the trims shown here, so for the same trim the cost per mile is the same.

How much does it cost to drive Rivian R1S 100 miles?

At about 42.9 kWh per 100 miles and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, 100 miles costs about $7.39 when you charge at home.

How much does a full charge cost for Rivian R1S?

Driving the full EPA range of 300 miles takes about 129 kWh from the wall for the Dual Large, 20 inch wheels trim, which costs about $22 at the 2025 US average price. You rarely charge from empty, so most sessions cost much less.
