Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2026, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 13 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.
About the Kia EV9 and its energy use
The EV9 is a three-row SUV, and its efficiency reflects its size: EPA lists 38.0 to 43.0 kWh per 100 miles across its five trims, well above the EV6 and most crossovers on this site.
The EPA time to charge from empty on a 240 volt connection ranges from 8.1 to 10.8 hours. The Long Range trims go farther, 260 to 305 miles against 230, and the Long Range RWD uses the same 38.0 kWh per 100 miles as the Standard Range, while the AWD trims use more.

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Kia EV9 would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 12.0 | $120 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 18.0 | $180 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 24.0 | $240 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 30.0 | $300 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $1.18 a gallon | $1.42 a gallon | $1.65 a gallon | $1.89 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.72 a gallon | $2.07 a gallon | $2.41 a gallon | $2.76 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $4.04 a gallon | $4.85 a gallon | $5.66 a gallon | $6.46 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
Kia EV9 charging cost questions
How much does it cost to charge a Kia EV9?
The Long Range AWD uses about 40.0 kWh per 100 miles, so 1,000 miles uses about 400 kWh. Multiply by your price per kWh, or use the tables on this page.
Why is the EV9 more expensive to charge than the EV6?
It is larger and heavier, so EPA measures about 38 to 43 kWh per 100 miles, against about 29 to 41 for the EV6.
How much does it cost to drive Kia EV9 100 miles?
At about 40.0 kWh per 100 miles and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, 100 miles costs about $6.89 when you charge at home.
How much does a full charge cost for Kia EV9?
