Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

Nissan Leaf charging cost by trim
| Trim | kWh per 100 mi | EPA range | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | 240 V charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 75 kWh, 18 inch steel wheels | 27.8 | 303 mi | 4.8 | $48 | 12.0 h |
| 75 kWh, 18 inch alloy wheels | 30.0 | 288 mi | 5.2 | $52 | 12.0 h |
| 75 kWh, 19 inch wheels | 32.7 | 259 mi | 5.6 | $56 | 12.0 h |
Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2026, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 18 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.
About the Nissan Leaf and its energy use
The Leaf was one of the first mass-market electric cars, and the 2026 model year is listed by EPA with a 75 kWh battery. EPA gives three wheel sizes for the same car, and the difference in efficiency between them is large: the 18 inch steel wheels use about 15 percent less electricity per mile than the 19 inch wheels.
Because wheel and tire choice moves the energy use this much, the cost per mile on this page is a range. The EPA time to charge from empty on a 240 volt connection is 12 hours for all three versions, so an overnight session at home can refill most of a day’s driving.
What it costs in other states

| North Dakota | 11.82 | 3.9 | $39 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | 3.9 | $39 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | 3.9 | $39 |
| United States average | 17.23 | 5.6 | $56 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | 13.2 | $132 |

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Nissan Leaf would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 9.8 | $98 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 14.7 | $147 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 19.6 | $196 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 24.5 | $245 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $0.97 a gallon | $1.16 a gallon | $1.35 a gallon | $1.55 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.41 a gallon | $1.69 a gallon | $1.97 a gallon | $2.26 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $3.31 a gallon | $3.97 a gallon | $4.63 a gallon | $5.29 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
Nissan Leaf charging cost questions
How much does it cost to charge a Nissan Leaf?
At the 19 inch wheel figure of about 32.7 kWh per 100 miles, 1,000 miles uses about 327 kWh. With the 18 inch steel wheels it is about 278 kWh. Multiply by your price per kWh.
Why does wheel size change the cost?
Larger wheels and wider tires add weight and rolling resistance and change how the car moves through the air. EPA tests each version separately, which is why the numbers differ.
How much does it cost to drive Nissan Leaf 100 miles?
At about 32.7 kWh per 100 miles and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, 100 miles costs about $5.64 when you charge at home.
How much does a full charge cost for Nissan Leaf?
Driving the full EPA range of 259 miles takes about 85 kWh from the wall for the 75 kWh, 19 inch wheels trim, which costs about $15 at the 2025 US average price. You rarely charge from empty, so most sessions cost much less.
