Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

About the Chevrolet Bolt and its energy use
EPA lists no 2026 Bolt, so this page uses the 2027 model year, the newest in the database. The Bolt is a compact electric hatchback, and EPA gives it an efficiency of about 28.2 kWh per 100 miles with a range of 262 miles.
EPA lists 6.8 hours to charge from empty on a 240 volt connection. For cost, as with every electric car, the efficiency figure and your price per kWh decide the result.

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Chevrolet Bolt would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 8.5 | $85 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 12.7 | $127 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 16.9 | $169 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 21.1 | $211 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $0.83 a gallon | $1.00 a gallon | $1.17 a gallon | $1.33 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.21 a gallon | $1.46 a gallon | $1.70 a gallon | $1.94 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $2.85 a gallon | $3.42 a gallon | $3.99 a gallon | $4.56 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
