Electric car running cost
Efficiency is wall-to-wheel, so charging losses are already in the kWh figure. The public price and the gas price are examples. Replace them with the prices where you charge and fill up.

Volkswagen ID.4 charging cost by trim
| Trim | kWh per 100 mi | EPA range | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | 240 V charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rear-wheel drive | 29.8 | 291 mi | 5.1 | $51 | 8.0 h |
| AWD | 33.0 | 263 mi | 5.7 | $57 | 8.0 h |
Source: U.S. EPA and DOE, fueleconomy.gov, model year 2026, checked October 10, 2026. The highlighted trim is the one used for the headline figures. Prices: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861. The least efficient trim uses about 11 percent more electricity per mile than the most efficient.
About the Volkswagen ID.4 and its energy use
The ID.4 is a compact SUV with two versions in the 2026 EPA data. The rear-wheel-drive version uses about 29.8 kWh per 100 miles and goes 291 miles. The AWD uses about 11 percent more and goes 263.
EPA lists 8.0 hours to charge from empty on a 240 volt connection for both versions. For daily use, a few hours on a home charger covers most days.

If you use public fast chargers
Public fast charging prices are set by each network and change with the place and the time. Check the price on the charger or in the app. This table shows what the Volkswagen ID.4 would cost per mile at four example prices, compared with charging at home at the US average.
| Price per kWh | Cents per mile | 1,000 miles | Versus home at US average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.30 | 8.9 | $89 | 1.7 times |
| $0.45 | 13.4 | $134 | 2.6 times |
| $0.60 | 17.9 | $179 | 3.5 times |
| $0.75 | 22.3 | $223 | 4.4 times |

Break-even gas price
| Where you charge | 25 mpg car | 30 mpg car | 35 mpg car | 40 mpg car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota price | $0.88 a gallon | $1.06 a gallon | $1.23 a gallon | $1.41 a gallon |
| US average price | $1.28 a gallon | $1.54 a gallon | $1.80 a gallon | $2.05 a gallon |
| Hawaii price | $3.01 a gallon | $3.61 a gallon | $4.21 a gallon | $4.81 a gallon |
If gas where you live costs more than the figure in the table, charging at home costs less per mile than driving a gas car with that fuel economy. If gas costs less, the gas car is cheaper per mile on fuel alone.
How we calculate it
Cost per mile is the EPA kWh per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the price per kWh. EPA measures efficiency at the wall, so charging losses are already inside the figure. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature, tires and load, so use the EV charging cost calculator with your own numbers.
Volkswagen ID.4 charging cost questions
How much does it cost to charge a Volkswagen ID.4?
The rear-wheel-drive version uses about 29.8 kWh per 100 miles, so 1,000 miles uses about 298 kWh. Multiply by your price per kWh, or use the tables here.
Is the AWD ID.4 more expensive to charge?
Per mile, yes, by about 11 percent in the EPA data, because the second motor adds weight and draw.
How much does it cost to drive Volkswagen ID.4 100 miles?
