What a hot tub costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 0.30 kWh | 5.17 cents |
| One day (24 hours) | 7.20 kWh | $1.24 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 219 kWh | $38 |
| One year (12 months) | 2,627 kWh | $453 |
Source: Planning watts of 300 and 24 hours a day, hours a day, using the average draw because the heater and pump cycle. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 25% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Insulated tub, mild climate | 150 | 24 | 109 | $19 |
| Typical tub | 300 | 24 | 219 | $38 |
| Poorly covered tub in a cold winter | 600 | 24 | 438 | $75 |
The lowest case costs $19 a month and the highest $75. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same hot tub costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 219 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $26 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $26 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $26 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $38 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $88 |
| California | 31.35 | $69 |

How a hot tub uses electricity
A hot tub holds water at temperature all day. Its electricity covers the heater, the circulation pump and sometimes jets, and most of the energy goes to replacing heat that escapes through the cover and the shell.
A well-insulated cover and a sheltered spot cut heat loss, and a lower set temperature in winter changes the cost a lot.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 150 to 600 watts. At 24 hours a day that is $19 to $75 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of a hot tub
- Use a thick, tight-fitting cover and replace it when it gets waterlogged.
- Lower the temperature when you are away.
- Shelter the tub from wind.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 300 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 24 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Hot Tub cost questions
How much does a hot tub cost to run per month?
The scenarios on this page price a well-insulated tub, a typical one and a poorly covered one at the US average price. Climate and cover quality move the number more than the tub brand.
Is it cheaper to leave a hot tub on or turn it off between uses?
For use every week or two, keeping it at temperature costs less than reheating from cold in many cases. For long gaps, lowering the set point is the better move.
How much does a hot tub cost to run per hour?
At 300 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about 5.17 cents an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does a hot tub use in a month?
About 219 kWh for 24 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 300 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
