Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What an aquarium costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 0.10 kWh | 1.72 cents |
| One day (24 hours) | 2.40 kWh | $0.41 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 73 kWh | $13 |
| One year (12 months) | 876 kWh | $151 |
Source: Planning watts of 100 and 24 hours a day, hours a day, because the pump and heater cycle and lights run on a timer. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 8% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small tank with a light and filter | 20 | 24 | 15 | $2.51 |
| 55 gallon tank with heater, filter and light | 100 | 24 | 73 | $13 |
| Large reef tank with strong lighting and chiller | 300 | 24 | 219 | $38 |
The lowest case costs $3 a month and the highest $38. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same aquarium costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 73 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $9 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $9 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $9 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $13 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $29 |
| California | 31.35 | $23 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $22 |

How an aquarium uses electricity
An aquarium uses a filter pump that runs all day, a light that runs on a timer and, for tropical fish, a heater that cycles to hold the temperature. The heater is usually the largest part of the average draw, and it works harder in a cool room.
Tank size, species, the temperature of the room and the type of lighting decide the cost. A reef tank with strong lights and a chiller uses much more than a small freshwater tank. LED lighting uses less than older fixtures.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 20 to 400 watts. At 24 hours a day that is $3 to $50 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of an aquarium
- Use LED lighting on a timer and do not leave it on around the clock.
- Keep the tank away from drafts and out of cold rooms, and use a lid to cut heat loss.
- Choose a heater sized to the tank, and an efficient pump.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 100 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 24 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Aquarium cost questions
How much does it cost to run an aquarium?
A 55 gallon tank averaging 100 watts uses about 73 kWh a month. Multiply by your price per kWh. A small tank uses much less, and a reef tank uses more.
What uses the most electricity in an aquarium?
Usually the heater in a cool room, then the lights, then the pump. A reef tank may add a chiller.
How much does an aquarium cost to run per hour?
At 100 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about 1.72 cents an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does an aquarium use in a month?
About 73 kWh for 24 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 100 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
