Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What a crypto miner costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 3.00 kWh | $0.52 |
| One day (24 hours) | 72.00 kWh | $12.41 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 2,189 kWh | $377 |
| One year (12 months) | 26,266 kWh | $4,527 |
Source: Planning watts of 3,000 and 24 hours a day, hours a day, because a miner runs around the clock. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 250% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small graphics card rig | 1,000 | 24 | 730 | $126 |
| Typical ASIC miner | 3,000 | 24 | 2,189 | $377 |
| Large ASIC miner | 3,500 | 24 | 2,554 | $440 |
The lowest case costs $126 a month and the highest $440. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same crypto miner costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 2,189 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $259 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $259 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $264 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $377 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $884 |
| California | 31.35 | $686 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $666 |

How a crypto miner uses electricity
A cryptocurrency miner runs at full power all day. Nearly all of the electricity ends up as heat, which means a miner also adds to the cooling load of a room in summer, and can offset a little heating in winter.
The type of machine sets the draw, from about 1,000 watts for a small graphics card rig to about 3,000 watts or more for a modern ASIC unit. Because the hours are fixed at 24, the electricity price decides the cost, and a plan with high summer or peak prices can raise it sharply.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 800 to 3,500 watts. At 24 hours a day that is $101 to $440 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of a crypto miner
- Check your price per kWh, including any tiered or time-of-use pricing, before you start. A miner uses the highest tier all month.
- Put the machine where its heat is useful or easy to vent, and where it will not strain a circuit.
- Never plug a large miner into a shared circuit or a power strip. Use a circuit sized for the load.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 3,000 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 24 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Crypto Miner cost questions
How much does it cost to run a crypto miner?
A 3,000 watt miner running all day uses 72 kWh a day. Multiply by your price per kWh to get the daily cost, and by 30 for a month. Whether that is worth it depends on what the machine earns, which this page does not estimate.
Does a miner raise my air conditioning bill?
Yes. Almost all of its power turns into heat in the room, so in summer the cooling system has to remove it too.
How much does a crypto miner cost to run per hour?
At 3,000 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about $0.52 an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does a crypto miner use in a month?
About 2,189 kWh for 24 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 3,000 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
