Cost to run this device
Cost = watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. It covers energy only, not the cost of buying the device.

What a sump pump costs to run
| Period | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of running | 0.80 kWh | $0.14 |
| One day (0.5 hours) | 0.40 kWh | $0.07 |
| One month (30.4 days) | 12 kWh | $2.10 |
| One year (12 months) | 146 kWh | $25 |
Source: Planning watts of 800 and 0.5 hours a day, hours of running time a day, which varies a lot with rain and groundwater. Price: 17.23 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from EIA Form EIA-861.
The monthly cost is 1% of the $150.68 average US electric bill. It runs all year, so the yearly cost is twelve times the monthly figure.
Three real-life cases
One figure cannot fit every home. These three cases show how much the answer moves with the equipment and the hours.
| Case | Watts | Hours a day | kWh a month | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dry season, a few short runs | 800 | 0.1 | 2 | $0.42 |
| Typical home | 800 | 0.5 | 12 | $2.10 |
| Wet spring, running often | 1,000 | 3 | 91 | $16 |
The lowest case costs $0 a month and the highest $16. Use the calculator above to match your own.
What it costs in other states
The same sump pump costs different amounts depending on the state, because the price per kWh differs. Here are the three cheapest states, the US average and the three costliest, for the same 12 kWh a month.
| Place | Cents per kWh | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| North Dakota | 11.82 | $1.44 |
| Idaho | 11.83 | $1.44 |
| Nebraska | 12.05 | $1.47 |
| United States average | 17.23 | $2.10 |
| Hawaii | 40.40 | $4.91 |
| California | 31.35 | $3.81 |
| Massachusetts | 30.41 | $3.70 |

How a sump pump uses electricity
A sump pump sits in a pit and runs when the water level rises, then shuts off. It draws power only while it runs, and a starting surge is higher than its running draw. Most of the year it uses little, and in a wet season it can run for hours.
Rainfall, the water table and the pump size decide the hours. A one-third horsepower pump typically draws several hundred watts while running, and a larger one draws more. A pump that runs constantly in dry weather may have a stuck float or a leak, and is worth checking.
The range for this kind of appliance runs from about 400 to 1,100 watts. At 0.5 hours a day that is $1 to $3 a month, which is why checking the label on yours is worth the minute.
Ways to cut the cost of a sump pump
- Test the pump each season by pouring water into the pit.
- Fix a pump that runs often in dry weather, since a stuck float or a check valve problem wastes power and wears the motor.
- Consider a battery backup so the pump works in an outage, because that is when basements flood.

How we got these numbers
The cost is watts divided by 1,000, times hours, times your price per kWh. The 800 watts is a planning figure for this kind of appliance, set from typical product ratings, and the 0.5 hours is an assumed day of use. Neither is copied from a federal table. Federal guidance describes the method and warns that real wattage varies, so we publish our own typical ranges and label them as such. Prices come from EIA Form EIA-861 for 2025.
The calculation is the standard one used in the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guidance on estimating appliance energy use. Wattage varies by product age and features, so the label on your own appliance beats any average. Read more in our methodology.
Sump Pump cost questions
How much electricity does a sump pump use?
A typical pump draws about 800 watts while it runs. If it runs for 30 minutes a day, it uses 0.4 kWh a day. In a wet season it can run much longer.
Why is my sump pump running all the time?
Heavy rain or a high water table can do it. If it runs in dry weather, a stuck float switch, a failed check valve or a broken pipe may be the cause. Have it checked.
How much does a sump pump cost to run per hour?
At 800 watts and the 2025 US average price of 17.23 cents per kWh, about $0.14 an hour. Use your own price to get your own figure.
How many kWh does a sump pump use in a month?
About 12 kWh for 0.5 hours of use a day over 30.4 days at 800 watts. A different wattage or schedule changes the total in proportion.
