Electric bill estimator by square feet
A rough way to reflect climate. Only applies when you choose a state.
Estimated monthly electric bill
$158
Use by size comes from the national EIA survey. It is an average across climates and fuels, and it does not know your weather, your heating fuel or how many people live in the home. Treat the result as a starting point and compare it with a real bill.

Source: Use from the EIA Residential Energy Consumption Survey 2020, converted to kWh a month. Prices from EIA Form EIA-861, 2025: 11.82 cents in North Dakota, 17.23 cents for the US and 40.40 cents in Hawaii.
How the estimate works
- Pick the band that fits your home. Each band holds the average electricity use of homes of that size in the national survey.
- Choose your state to use its average price per kWh, or leave it blank to use the US average.
- Optionally scale the use by your state's average use compared with the nation, which gives a rough sense of climate.
- The calculator multiplies use by price. Fixed charges are included in the average price.
The survey covers all kinds of homes and fuels. A home that heats with gas uses less electricity than one that heats with electricity, and a home in a hot climate uses more for cooling.
Why size is only part of the story
- Heating fuel. Electric heat can double winter use compared with gas heat.
- Climate. Hot or cold places use more.
- People and habits. A larger household uses more, and so does a home office or an electric car.
- Equipment. A pool pump, a hot tub or an old refrigerator can dominate a bill. See what appliances cost to run.
Check the result against a real bill
If the estimate is far from your actual bills, use the bill checker to compare your kWh and price with your state, and read how many kWh a house uses for more benchmarks.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the average electric bill for a 2,000 square foot house?
Homes of 2,000 to 2,499 square feet used about 1,015 kWh a month in the national survey, which costs about $175 at the 2025 US average price. Your state price and climate change it.
Why do two homes of the same size have different bills?
Because heating fuel, climate, number of people, equipment and price per kWh all differ. Size explains only part of the difference.
Where does the use by size come from?
From the EIA Residential Energy Consumption Survey 2020, a national survey of homes. It is an average across the country.
